Gergely Bogányi was born in 1974 and began playing piano at the age of four in his home town of Vác. He studied at the Liszt Academy of Music, the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and at Indiana University Bloomington under professors László Baranyay, Zsuzsa Esztó, Matti Raekallio and György Sebők. He has won prizes at numerous competitions, including the International Franz Liszt Competition in Budapest in 1996. In 1999, the Bogányi-Kelemen Trio won first prize in an international competition for t...rios held in the Finnish town of Kuhmo. The pianist is today one of the most popular artists on the global concert circuit. His repertoire includes more than 30 piano concertos and a significant proportion of the body of works written for the instrument, including all of Chopin’s compositions for solo piano. In a series of concerts both at home and in Finland in 2002, Bogányi performed Liszt’s 12 Transcendental Etudes and the complete works of Chopin for solo piano, winning the Gramofon Prize for best concert series of the year. He received the Liszt Prize in the year 2000, and was awarded the “Cross of Merit of the Order of the White Rose” by the president of the Republic of Finland in 2002. The general assembly of Pest County unanimously awarded him a distinction in recognition of “services to the culture of Pest County” in 2003. On 15 March 2004, he was awarded the Kossuth Prize. He was made an honorary citizen of his home town of Vác in 1996 and of Zebegény in 2007, winning the Junior Prima Prize in 2008. Presented by: Jakobi Koncert Kft.
