Of course you like itI The composer Carl Orff found his true world in this work. (Wit...h a few exceptions, his works from before 1935 were all banned by him.) “His style was a unique phenomenon and could not be emulated”, wrote musicologist Péter Várnai about Orff. Through the virtuosic use of percussion and pianos, he placed rhythm into centre stage. He employed basic chords and made the text strike home by monotonous repetitions. He also favoured attractive – although to some, vulgar – melodies. The text is based on a collection of 13th century verses that are essentially student drinking songs. They were discovered at the Benediktbeuren monastery in the 19th century. The name Carmina Burana derives from its Latin name, Bura Sancti Benedicti (“Songs of Bura”).
