János Rolla took over direction of the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra in 1979 following the death of its artistic director Frigyes Sándor. The orchestra has performed in many of the world’s leading venues, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Sydney Opera House and the Paris Théâtre de la Ville and soon established a reputation as one of the top ensembles. Their soloist tonight will be the Vienna born violinist Benjamin Schmid who has won numerous international prizes and awards. “...He pays more attention to each bar in his performance than others pay to an entire sonata” wrote Gramophone in July 2000. His immense repertoire and range of interest spreads from works for violin and orchestra by classical composers to passionate jazz music – his exceptionally successful “Hommage a Grapelli” performance is currently in its sixth season. He has worked with numerous orchestras and this season will give a concert with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Czech Philharmonic, the Gulbenkian Orchestra, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra as well as several South African ensembles.
