Levente Gyöngyösi is an outstanding representative of his generation, the winner of numerous competitions and holder of prestigious prizes. Generally he composes works on commission, and on this occasion presents the première of his Sinfonia concertante written for the Pannon Philharmonic as its composer in residence. It was at another première exactly 100 years ago that the forces of order had to be called out to pacify the audience. The first performance of Stravinsky’s ballet The Rite of Spr...ing – and five more thereafter – were drowned in scandal each successive night. Despite the disturbances, the work was played through to its conclusion. As the composer himself recalled it, the musical ideas initially took shape before the idea later arose of a primitive Russian pagan ritual entailing the sacrifice of a young girl to the god of Spring. Both the music and choreography of the work were revolutionary, and the sounds and spectacle shocked the audience. Many regard The Rite of Spring as one of the key works of the 20th century, which had a profound influence on composers to come and on musical thinking as a whole, not only in the classical sphere.
