The European Union Youth Orchestra was formed in 1974 by the European Parliamentary committee for youth and culture. Its objective was to establish a musical workshop for Europe's talented young musicians to stage one-off productions led by well known conductors in major cities throughout the continent. With the formation of the European Union, the orchestra's mission broadened to include demonstrating the collective creativity and talent of young Europeans. When the orchestra first performed in... 1978, it was conducted by Claudio Abbado and a string of top conductors have since worked with the orchestra, including Barenboim, Bernstein, Giulini, Haitink, Karajan, Mehta, Rostropovich and Solti. Every year, more than 4,000 musicians apply to join the EUYO, which currently numbers 140 performers aged between between 14 and 23. The Hungarian musicians performing with the orchestra in the 2010/11 season are Hajnalka Standi (violin), Ákos Nagy (double bass), Marietta Szűcs (flute) and Bálint Döme Mohai (bassoon).
