Not only is 2011 the year that Hungary assumes presidency of the EU, it also marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Ferenc Liszt. On the initiative of the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music, the five top music academies in Central Europe have combined to organise a joint orchestra tour. The Budapest school are joined by 15 music scholars from each of the Graz, Vienna, Zagreb and Ljubljana academies in the Central European Youth Orchestra project. The students will be led by Zoltán Kocsis in perf...orming works from the four most important Hungarian composers of the hundred years leading up to 1950. The programme features a Kocsis reworking of a Liszt piano piece, Ernő Dohnányi's playful “piano concerto”, Béla Bartók's Dance Suite, perhaps the most beautiful musical expression of nations living together in harmony, and Zoltán Kodály's most personal work, Dances of Galanta. These four representatives of this once unified political territory continue to stamp their influence on the cultural life of the Central Europe. Following the concert at the Palace of Arts, the orchestra will perform the same programme in Zagreb, Ljubjana, Graz and Vienna. Presented by the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music
