One of the greatest talents of her generation of Hungarian opera singers, Erika Miklósa became the youngest ever member of the Hungarian State Opera House when she made her debut at Papagena at the tender age of just twenty in 1990. More remarkable still was that she had no formal qualifications as a singer. “In uncustomary fashion, she initially became a sports woman and only later a singer. She needed the sporting career and the spirit of competition before she could enter on her great journey.... This is how she learned to conquer her own self. She learned to deal with nothing else and no one else except her own talent. She learned to bring the very best out of herself” wrote her husband and manager Zoltán Lóránth. Erika Miklósa’s international career began in Brussels in 1992 and she then perfected her knowledge in Milan and Philadelphia. By the age of just thirty, she was a famous name both in Hungary and abroad. She made her debut at the New York Metropolitan Opera in autumn 2004, leading to a three year contract which has now been extended to the 2008–2009 season. She has now sung the role of the Queen of the Night from Mozart’s The Magic Flute nearly three hundred times to tremendous acclaim in New York, Covent Garden, the Paris Opéra Bastille, the Madrid Teatro Real and the Berlin Deutsche Opera, among others. In 2006, she celebrated the first fifteen years of her career with a jubilee concert at the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall and her guests included Bernadett Wiedemann and Leo Nucci. In 2007, she staged another concert at the Palace with the Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja and Italian bass Robert Scandiuzzi. She has now created a tradition and will return in 2008 for a further gala inviting again distinguished singer colleagues, an Italian tenor and a baritone.
