For nearly a decade, the New Year’s Eve late night concert by Amadinda and Gábor Presser has been an unmissable event of the Budapest concert season. Over the years, audiences have grown to such a degree that tickets now have to be bought months in advance. One of the great attractions of this event, which ushers in the New Year is, that the musicians play things, which are rarely if ever heard before, and may never be heard again. The first half is traditionally given over to Amadinda and the ...most popular works of their repertoire. Then there comes the music of Johann Sebastian Bach in the minutes before Midnight, followed by the gongs of Amadinda striking away the last seconds of the old year. The first half of the concert has to be planned with great precision to ensure they don’t miss the exact moment of midnight. But the second half is much more relaxed and it lasts as long as the audience wants it to. It too is awash with unrepeatable moments. The first piece is traditionally a Strauss polka, then the evening’s guests arrive, Gábor Presser and János Karácsony. Besides Presser evergreens and new arrangements of LGT songs, we will hear the work that gives the concert its name, Drum Street Blues, which Gábor Presser composed in 1989 for Amadinda.
