The performances in this year’s “Music and…” concert series explore four key aspects of our shared culture that can be very effectively captured in art. The first two are the inseparable poles at the heart of Christianity, namely the divine and the devilish, while the second pair are the contrasting yet co-existing characteristics of our European existence; our common cultural past and our strong national roots. These performances feature explanations from the conductor that will help the audien...ce better understand the common themes of the works performed. Just as there is a definitive idea of Christianity within the context of its cultural tradition in most art, so Christian traditions prevail in music in an equally distinctive form. As the sole element known to us from the music of the first millennium of Christian Europe, the Gregorian chants were never integrated into the genres of the second millennium as these gradually became less and less communal and progressively more focused on the individual. In the motet technique of classical vocal polyphony, and particularly in the sacred modes of expression of the Romantic period, the Gregorian chant took on an increasingly symbolic content and externalised, referential character, while other musical development continued on its own path built on the harmonic system. The specific culmination of this process was Orff’s Carmina Burana, which, taking the profane, sometimes frivolous verse of the Benediktbeuern students and clergy as its basis and adopting a musical language ranging from Gregorian music to parodies thereof, became a landmark in the popularisation of a musical idiom for the 20th century.
