Today’s performance in the Music-Image series focuses on Czech musical culture. The first part of the concert will feature Dvořák’s most popular work, the Symphony No. 9, in which the composer found musical expression for his experiences in the United States. The pictorial quality of this work is as clearly discernible as it is in the work by Smetana that forms the second half of the evening’s concert. Smetana’s cycle of symphonic poems entitled Má vlast is a composition that is central to Czec...h national music. The cycle comprises six individual works in which the composer summarizes the beauty of the Czech landscape and the most important moments in Czech legend and history. The four pieces to be heard this evening illustrate the pictorial quality of Smetana’s music well, whether they deal with exalted episodes in Czech history, the course of the River Vltava as it meanders gracefully or surges powerfully onwards from its source, the story of Šárka the female warrior of Czech myth, or the march, battle and rapturous victory of the Hussites immortalized in the legend of Blaník.
