Mussorgsky: Boris Godunov – prologue and Act 4 Stravinsky’s opera-oratorio, Oedipus Rex received a concert première in 1927 and its first stage performance in 1928. The libretto by Jean Cocteau is based on Sophocles and the oratorio is one of the pearls of the male voice literature and also a model for Neo-Classicism. Its composer uses all the elements from music history that swim around the minds of 20th century man, and makes characteristic associations while reinventing well-known phrases fr...om different musical eras. In the second half of the concert – as befits the “Vox Fortissima” concept – three choirs and the MR Children’s Choir will join together to perform the prologue and fourth act of perhaps Mussorgsky’s principal work, his opera Boris Godunov. The libretto is based on Pushkin’s drama of the same name and the composer demonstrates he has learned the lessons of his own time. The action derives from the conflict between power and the people. Mussorgsky puts a whole historical era on stage and facilitates the musical characterisation with certain “memory provoking motifs” which are paired to various characters. The contradictory figure of the Tsar stands out from the diversity of figures in the opera: Boris is not just an evil tyrant and murder but also a great personality and fine father. Dian Chobanov was born in Bulgaria and is a regular guest with the Dohnányi Orchestra Budafok. Since 2002 he has been first conductor of the Vienna Schönbrunner Schlossorchester, and since 2007 has occupied the same post with the Stara Zagora opera in his native country. Since 2003 he has been also chief conductor of the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra.
