Conductor: Gábor Hollerung Featuring: György Oravecz – piano Tamás Pánczél: Piano Concerto – world première Mahler: Symphony No. 5 in C sharp minor The Dohnányi Orchestra Budafok was founded as a youth orchestra in 1970 and in 1993, with support from Budapest’s 22nd District (Budafok), it became a professional orchestra but has retained its youthful vigour. Besides the standard repertoire, the orchestra has frequently programmed rarities, placing particular emphasis on 20th century works a...nd pieces by contemporary Hungarian composers, in addition to oratorio performances with its regular partner, the Budapest Academic Choir Society. Gábor Hollerung has directed the orchestra since 1989. Thanks to his openness, the ensemble has participated in some exciting projects: in 2006 it took part in the “Mozart Differently” production, featuring Béla Szakcsi Lakatos and Erika Miklósa, and on the 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birth, it performed the Requiem with the additions by Tamás Pánczél who happens to play with the first violins. He says his Piano Concerto is “melodically, harmonically and rhythmically graspable for human feelings, an easily comprehended contemporary music with a virtuosic piano solo”. With this concert, the orchestra marks the 15th anniversary of turning professional and has selected a suitably difficult and complex creation, Gustav Mahler’s Symphony Nr. 5 to show just how good they are. The concert will climax with an encore surely demanded by the listeners in which present and former members will participate.
