Felix Mendelssohn's guiding principles can be summed up as a dedication to home life, religion and idealism. He was surrounded by prophets, particularly by the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn, the grandfather he never actually knew, whose life’s work was dedicated to the assimilation of the Jewish people. Another influential figure from the past was Martin Luther, whose religion the Mendelssohn family adopted. And then there was the musical prophet Johann Sebastian Bach, whose musical legacy was b...uilt into the consciousness of the Mendelssohn family over generations, before Felix eventually became a pioneering figure in the Bach renaissance. Last but not least, he also enjoyed a special friendship with a living prophet in the shape of Goethe. It was not easy to break into the limelight among such elevated company. His wonderful music bears testimony to this struggle – and it is through these works that we will attempt to interpret these messages from the prophets.
