Of the students of the Russian Piano School below the age of 40, Denis Matsuev is among the best known in Hungary and around the world. Born in 1975, Matsuev recorded piano concertos by Soviet Russian composers under the guidance of Valery Gergiev and Yuri Temirkanov. His début at Carnegie Hall, featuring the works of Lyadov, Skriabin and Prokofiev, was also committed to record. There was also a place on the programme for Liszt's Piano Sonata in B minor – and American critics were suitably impre...ssed by the young artist's slick navigation of Liszt's frequent digressions to both the devilish and the heavenly. The Danse Macabre, Liszt's “third piano concerto,” drags the audience downwards – and the pianist must also plumb the depths of hell to perform with any degree of authenticity the terrifying effects that fill this paraphrase of the Dies irae melody. He must be affected by the music in the same way that the enormous fresco Triumph of Death by 14th century painter Buffalmacco overcame Liszt on his travels to Pisa. The two genuine piano concertos on the programme are unusual for Liszt works: the movements follow one another without pause and are given cohesion by motifs repeated in several variations across this major work. The Russian piano virtuoso will be supported in this performance of outstanding stamina and technical proficiency by the Danubia Orchestra Óbuda, founded by Domonkos Héja.
