National Philharmonic Orchestra With: the National Choir (chorus master: Mátyás Antal) Conducted by: Zoltán Kocsis Mélisande – Juliette Galstian, Pelléas – Leonardo Caimi, Arkel – Jérôme Varnier, Golaud – Vincent Le Texier, Le Petit Yniold –Orsolya Sáfár, Geneviève –Andrea Meláth, Un médecin – István Bundovics Debussy worked ten years on this opera, adapting a work by a contemporary Belgian writer and poet Maurice Maeterlinck. It is a peculiar issue that the composer and the writer got i...nto an irreconcilable conflict already before the premier, because of the person of the female title character. In spite of this, the piece achieved a loud success at its premier in 1902 at the Opéra-Comique of Paris. The opera is set in the castle of Allemonde and in its environment. Golaud finds a crying girl in the forest. He takes her with him to his grandfather's castle and marries her. The young wife, Mélisande spends a lot of time with Golaud's brother, Pelléas. Once, when playing with her wedding ring, Mélisande accidentally drops it into a deep well. Jealousy for his much younger brother awakens in the heart of Golaud and he assigns great significance to the loss of the ring. His passion drives him to increasingly despicable deeds: he uses little Yniold, his son from his first marriage, to watch over Pelléas and Melisande, however nothing confirms his suspicion of being cheated on. Pelléas prepares to leave for a long journey and asks Melisande to meet him one last time to say farewell. Golaud is on the watch for them and murders Pelléas. When Melisande gives birth to her child and is dying, Golaud still keeps on questioning her whether she loved Pelléas. The woman is only able to answer that they loved each other innocently, before closing her eyes for eternity. The current performance, which lines up excellent foreign and Hungarian singers, takes place in the joint organisation of the Palace of Arts, the National Philharmonic Orchestra and the Miskolc Opera Festival.
