Conductor: András Deák Featuring: József Kiss – oboe Tamás Deák: Star City – suite (concert hall première) Frigyes Hidas: Oboe Concerto Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 4 in A major (“Italian”), op. 90 The orchestra was formed in 1961 and since 1991 has been led by András Deák, who is also regularly invited from overseas. Since 2000, he has been one of the principal guest conductors at the “Salute to Vienna” New Year’s Day concert in Chicago which is the only one to enjoy the official endorsemen...t and support of Vienna. The Danube Symphony Orchestra performs not just in Hungary but also regularly abroad; it has worked with such luminaries as the great tenor Giuseppe di Stefano, flautist James Galway and jazz musician Ray Charles. Before a performance of Felix Mendelssohn’s sunny, Mediterranean Symphony No. 4, we shall hear two works that relate to both a happy and a sad event. The orchestra will remember Frigyes Hidas who passed away in March 2007 with a performance of his graduation work, his Oboe Concerto which launched his enduring popularity since the fifties. The opening work celebrates the eightieth birthday of Tamás Deák who has supplied the music for over a hundred popular songs and cartoons and who has written a number of jazz pieces as well. In 2007 he was awarded an Artisjus Prize for his “Life Time Achievement in Light Music”. His symphonic poem Star City was commissioned by Hungarian Radio in 1971 and was recorded just with Frigyes Hidas conducting. This one movement work displays a succession of different moods and its title was inspired by the intensive space research of that time. The theme offered the composer also the opportunity to experiment with a diversity of orchestra techniques.
