Featuring: János Pálúr – organ Conductor: András Deák Bernstein: Candide – overture Jongen: Symphonie Concertante for Organ and Orchestra György Ránki: King Pomádé’s New Clothes – suite The Danube Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1961 and its repertoire spans virtually all styles and genres. Besides symphony concerts, the orchestra also works regularly in oratorio, ballet, operetta and opera performances. Since 1991, the ensemble has been led by chief conductor András Deák. The spar...kling overture to Leonard Bernstein’s musical opera Candide very rapidly became part of the regular concert repertoire. So much so that following its premiere in 1957, it became one of the most regularly performed works by an American composer in the 20th century. The best known work by the Belgian organist, composer and teacher Joseph Jongen is his organ symphony which he wrote in 1926. Many regard this as the most splendid work in the entire genre. Hungarian composer György Ránki composed his opera King Pomádé’s New Clothes which is based on the fairytale by Andersen, to a commission from Hungarian Radio. After receiving its radio premiere, Ránki adapted this splendid music with its enjoyable musical ideas and large dose of humour, for the stage and also made two suites from its material. He received the Kossuth Prize for this work in 1954. From January to March 2005, before its official opening, the Palace of Arts underwent a testing phase during which Hungarian orchestras performed almost daily, giving us not only a sense of the hall’s capabilities but also presenting a fascinating picture of Hungary’s orchestral life. The positive experiences gathered during this “spontaneous” festival spawned the concept of turning it into a permanent feature of the Palace of Arts’ concert series and it has now become an established new tradition. Thus in 2006, the series Symphonia Hungarorum – Hungarian Symphonic Panorama was created and in 2007, no less than fifteen Hungarian symphonic ensembles will represent themselves at the festival. As last year, the orchestras are free to choose their own programmes with the proviso they perform in each concert at least one 20th or 21st century Hungarian work.
