The conductor of this concert, Daniele Gatti is one of the busiest of today’s star conductors. He was born in Milan and after making his debut at the La Fenice Opera House in Venice, conducted at the Chicago Lyric Opera, the Berlin Staatsoper and the New York Metropolitan Opera. He made his debut at the Carnegie Hall in the 1989-90 season; from 1992 to 1997 he directed the Rome Santa Cecilia orchestra, and from 1995 to 1997, also worked as first guest conductor at Covent Garden, London. Gatti wa...s music director of the Bologna opera house (Teatro Comunale) from 1997, and occupied the same post with the London Royal Philharmonic Orchestra from 1996 to 2009. In 2005, he conducted alongside Zubin Mehta and Christian Thielemann at the gala concert to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the reopening of the Vienna State Opera. Gatti regularly conducts the Vienna Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Dresden Staatskapelle, as well as the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; his recordings of Mahler, Bartók, Prokofiev, Respighi and Tchaikovsky are among the best on CD. In 2006 he made his Hungarian debut with the Scala Milan Orchestra. He brings to Budapest the ensemble whom he has led since 2008, occupying a post whose predecessors include Charles Munch, Sergiu Celibidache, Lorin Maazel, Kurt Masur and Charles Dutoit. The Orchestre National de France works at Radio France. They are associated with the premières of many important 20th century French works, including compositions by Boulez and Messaien. One of the pieces they will play is a work of key importance to 20th century music, Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring – subtitled “Image from Pagan Russia” – which is characterised by its rhythmic concept, “barbaric” character, daring sonorities and unique orchestral colours.
