When we hear works at a concert which are performed in transcription, we usually accept it without too much ado. “It’s the same, just different” we say with a knowing nod. Some experts lobby strongly for the original work although most of us have little problem with hearing, say, Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition in Ravel’s orchestral version rather than the piano original. Writing transcriptions is most certainly not an innocent occupation. The investigation into the “essence” that the tr...anscriber desires to extract from the score resembles more the work of a detective. This “reading of signs” is a type of spiritual struggle which is more than the detective just learning to read the signs correctly: he has to understand the motives behind them. This means nothing less than understanding the original composer better than oneself. Without the enthusiasm of youth, who would dare to set out on such a journey? Csaba Király is remarkably at ease in all areas of keyboard playing in the most diverse musical styles and periods. His remarkable appetite for work and technical skill, as well as the remarkable range of his talents from continuo player through chamber musician to conductor, put Király (born in Komló in 1965) on the musical map at a young age. He approaches music as a creator and nothing demonstrates this better than his improvisations and arrangements. He has transposed numerous orchestral and oratorio works to organ, among them Liszt’s Coronation Mass, Bach’s Brandenburg concertos 2, 3 and 4, Mahlers Eighth Symphony, Beethoven’s Egmont Overture and symphonies (5, 7 and 9), Schumann’s Symphony No. 1, Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Nights Dream, Stravinsky’s Petrushka – and he programmes these at his concerts in both churches and concert halls.
