They call the organ the queen of instruments, because of all the instruments it has both the largest size and the widest register, while also capable of reproducing the tones of all the other instruments and combining them in a unique way. At the same time, this “title” also suggests that the organ is difficult, aristocratic, demanding respect and unapproachable. And yet this huge instrument, in the hands of an artist such as Bernhard Haas, can be delicate, dynamic and boldly innovative in spiri...t. Having studied under Zsigmond Szathmáry, Albert Simon and Jean Guillou, among others, this winner of the 1988 Liszt Organ Competition in Budapest does not play Bach, instead performing works by composers that others rarely tackle. Haas will play a selection of works which blends old and new, reflecting his openness and the broadness of his repertoire. We will hear compositions by Georg Muffat, in whose music the cultures of European nations mingled in the second half of the 17th century, and Louis Couperin, admired by Louis XIV but only rediscovered in the mid-20th century, alongside works from two greats of the 20th century. The second half of the concert promises to be particularly exciting as Haas plays his own transcription of a masterpiece by Franz Liszt, the Sonata in B minor, accompanied by special visual effects. This will be no mere light show, but a two and three-dimensional projected animation which will set portions of the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall and the organ itself in virtual motion, matching a spellbinding spectacle and experience to the entrancing music. A stage conversation under the title Prelude will precede the concert from 6.30 pm, giving ticket holders the opportunity to better familiarise themselves with the musicians and the works they will perform.
