A bitter comedy that is reminiscent of the dawn of Hungarian theatre; a philosophical tale that evokes early Romanticism; and a cheekily profane new take on antique siren stories. All this on a single night, with music by contemporary Hungarian composers. Standing at the helm is conductor György Selmeczi, one of the savviest navigators of the dramaturgical seas of musical theatre.
The programme includes the most interesting, most entertaining parts of some of the greatest operatic t...reats from the past decade. József Chudy's 18th-century parody, Pikkó herczeg és Jutka Perzsi, was adapted for a "tragedy” by György Orbán. The libretto of György Selmeczi's mini opera was written by Géza Szőcs. The story concerns a mermaid who fancies a theatrical career, learns to sing, and seduces a conductor. János Vajda used Georg Büchner's Leonce and Lena for his own version of the drama, whose music focuses on a common philosophical question: is one free to think the first thought again; can one be honest and speak one's mind?
