Stravinsky wrote his ballet The Firebird for Sergei Diaghilev’s company. The piece was an enormous success at its première in Paris in 1910, immediately winning its young composer worldwide fame. Stravinsky subsequently arranged an orchestral suite from the ballet music, which he revised twice in later years. The work is a fine illustration of the influences defining the style of Stravinsky’s early period as a composer. On the one hand, he follows the brilliant orchestration technique of his mas...ter Rimsky-Korsakov, and on the other he adopts the evocative, bold tonalities of the French impressionists, while simultaneously allowing the influence of Russian folk music to be felt.
