Structurally, Mozart’s Concerto for Flute and Harp is simple, striving to make the most of the opportunities inherent in the two instruments: the melodiousness of the flute and the distinctive, rich ornamentation of the harp. The relationship of the two solo instruments to each other and to the orchestra recalls the sinfonia concertante genre fashionable at the time, but the tone also evokes the mood of a divertimento. Premièred by the Vienna Philharmonic on 30 December 1877, Brahms’s Symphony ...No. 2 was an enormous success. Its good-humoured, idyllic mood only occasionally switches to the composer’s more customary brooding tone. The faint strains of a waltz are intermittently discernible in the first movement, before the contrasting darker, slower second movement gives way to the enchanting and graceful grazioso, which then moves into a festive conclusion in the finale of the work. Brahms himself said of the work that “it is so cheerful and gentle in tone that it could have been written directly for a young married couple.” On completing his studies as a flautist, Sir James Galway went on to play with ensembles that included the Covent Garden Opera, the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. From 1969 to 1975, he was principal flute of the Berlin Philharmonic under Herbert von Karajan, before embarking on a solo career. Beyond the classical repertoire, he often performs contemporary music, has played Irish folk music with the Chieftains and performed with Pink Floyd in the Berlin concert of The Wall. His recordings have sold 30 million copies to date.
