Mussorgsky’s A Night on Bald Mountain conjures up a ghoulish witches’ sabbath in astonishingly vivid fashion. The composition was first performed in a revised orchestral arrangement by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in 1886, several years after the composer’s death, and this is the version that remains the best known until today. Shostakovich wrote his Violin Concerto No. 1 in the years of Stalin’s oppression in 1947/48. It was only premièred in 1955, after the dictator’s death, with David Oistrakh as ...soloist. The composer broke with the genre’s traditional three-movement form, structuring the concerto in four movements in the manner of a symphony. Moreover, the concerto even takes on the character of programme music in its use of titles for each movement that go beyond the traditional indications of tempo: namely nocturne – scherzo – passacaglia – burlesque. The grave and slow closing movement provides Tchaikovsky’s final symphony with its distinctive dramatic structure, while the dance in the second movement – in 5/4 time but nevertheless evoking a waltz – is similarly unorthodox. The première of the work was conducted by the composer himself just nine days before his death in 1893. The evening’s soloist Maxim Fedotov is not only an internationally acclaimed violinist, but has also made quite a name for himself as a conductor over the past decade. As a soloist, he has played worldwide in the most prestigious concert halls, while he performs as a chamber musician with his regular partner, the pianist Galina Petrova. The core of his repertoire is comprised of the works of Russian composers, but he also often plays music by Beethoven, Mozart and Paganini. Presented by: Concerto Budapest
