Under the baton of András Keller, Concerto Budapest will perform three works at this concert which – in differing ways – are closely connected to an illustrious musical predecessor. Prokofiev’s “Classical” Symphony, composed in 1916-17, is regarded as one of the first works of neo-classical music. The four-movement work, which radiates gaiety and lightness, imitates the style of Haydn and, to a lesser extent, Mozart. Prokofiev builds the phrasing of the classical Viennese masters into his sympho...ny in a highly sensitive manner and without directly quoting from them. The result is that his own striking presence as a composer is never in doubt for a moment. Rachmaninoff was neither the first nor the last composer in the history of music to be inspired by the 24th and last piece in the famed series of caprices by Paganini. The Rhapsody to be heard at this concert presents the various facets of the well-known Paganini theme as a set of 24 variations. In 1967, Rodion Shchedrin assembled an orchestral suite from the melodies of Bizet’s opera Carmen for his wife Maya Plisetskaya, then the prima ballerina of the Bolshoi Theatre. The suite is not merely a series of transcriptions, as Shchedrin deliberately re-composed the original, incorporating new rhythms and – primarily thanks to an expanded percussion section – unique sound textures and instrumentation. The soloist for the Rachmaninoff work will be Anna Vinnitskaya. Born in 1983, the Russian pianist has proven her artistic excellence by winning accolades such as first prize in the Queen Elisabeth Competition for piano in Brussels in 2007. Since then, she has produced two recordings and given solo recitals at the most prestigious festivals and concert halls throughout the world. Presented by: Concerto Budapest
