Das Paradies und die Peri is an oratorio comprising a curious hybrid of genres, yet the atmosphere and technical elements of Schumann's songs, choral works and symphonic music are equally at home in this richer format. The libretto is based on an exotic tale by the popular Irish romantic author Thomas Moore. The hero is the Peri, a fallen angel born from the marriage of an angel and a mortal. The creature is excluded from heaven on the basis of its parents. The Peri is told by the angel guarding... the gates of Eden that it would only be admitted when bearing the gift most dear to the gods. The Peri first brings the last drop of blood of a soldier who died fighting for the freedom of India, but forgiveness is not granted. Its second gift, the last breath of a young Egyptian woman who refuses to leave the side of a lover dying of the plague, is also refused. The third attempt is finally successful: In Syria, the Peri sees a cold-hearted, repeat sinner who stands beside an innocent child preparing to commit an unspeakable act. The child sinks to his knees and begins to pray, prompting the sinner to break down in tears and repent of all his sins. The Peri takes the tears of heartfelt repentance to the gates of heaven, which open ceremoniously before it as the young angel is welcomed to the kingdom of eternal light. This extremely touching and thoroughly romantic story inspired perhaps Schumann's finest work. As the composer himself wrote to a friend, “Last Friday, I finished my Paradies und die Peri, my most voluminous work and, I hope, my best.” Presented by: Concerto Budapest
