The opening piece on tonight's programme is Asyla by contemporary English composer Thomas Adès, an orchestral work of four movements featuring a variety of unusual instruments. The title is the plural of the word “asylum”, which simultaneously conveys the meaning of a sacred place, a haven and a madhouse. This will be followed by two iconic works of romantic orchestral music. Both are considered programme music in that they are founded on a narrative drawn from outside music. Liszt's symphonic ...conceptualisation, and the genre of symphonic music as a whole, was greatly influenced by Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, which set programme music in an entirely new light. “The composer's goal was to depict various events in the life of an artist, insofar as it is possible to express these in music,” Berlioz wrote in the notes accompanying the symphony. Through the transformation of a single idée fixe, he follows the blossoming, betrayal and death visions of his hero's love. Liszt's expansive piano concerto was inspired by a piece of art, the Danse Macabre, a 14th century Italian fresco by Buonamico Buffalmacco. The work is musically linked to Berlioz's symphony in that both use the melody of the Dies Irae, a hymn from the middle ages. The Dance of Death will be played by Gergely Bogányi, a Kossuth Prize-winning pianist considered by some to be the very reincarnation of Liszt himself. Presented by: Concerto Budapest
