In his own time, Saverio Mercadante (1795-1870) was primarily recognised as the highly productive opera composer of Rossini and Donizetti's generation. However, as opera increasingly takes a back seat to other genres, it is for his small number of instrumental works that he is increasingly remembered today. It is difficult to understand why flautists do not keep Mercadante's jaunty Flute Concerto in E minor in their repertoire, which he composed while still a student at the Naples Conservatory i...n 1813. The orchestral ritornello of the opening section bears the classical hallmarks of the key of E minor in its heroic and painful tone, yet the operatic composer unmistakably reveals himself in the cantinellas of the flute solos. Following the passionate opening, the largo section can be regarded as a single solo aria, while the unusual dynamic of "rondo russo” is applied to the finale. Although it is often considered Italian in style, the melody is firmly grounded in genuine Russian folk songs and its language would have been considered exotic by the music enthusiasts of the time. Presented by Concerto Budapest.
