Featuring Dénes Várjon – piano Brahms: Piano Concerto in D minor, op. 15 György Kurtág: New Messages for Orchestra, op. 34a Brahms: Symphony no. 2 in D major, op. 73 The first motifs in Brahms’s Piano Concerto in D minor were written down in sketches for a symphony in 1854. He later thought in terms of a work for two pianos and only five years later, plumped for a concerto form. György Kurtág’s “New Messages” cycle is fundamentally a reformulation of earlier works – with dedications to frie...nds and acquaintances. The movements tend to be very short: Kurtág’s art is best characterized in his orchestral pieces by their concision and terseness. Brahms’s Symphony no. 2 was written the year after the infinitely successful debut of his first Symphony in 1877. Musicologists have discovered subtle and concealed references in the first and third movements to the themes and ideas contained in Haydn’s Symphony no. 103 in E flat major.
