László Lajtha, who was born 120 years ago and died a half century ago, was one of the most important Hungarian composers, folk music researchers and music teachers of the first half of the 20th century. Although his life’s work is in many ways related to that of Bartók and Kodály, who were ten years his senior, his career path was very much his own. His activity was astonishingly diverse, and he left a huge oeuvre of compositions for posterity. Having already been neglected for decades, however,... it will probably take many more years for Lajtha to occupy the position he deserves in the historical canon of Hungarian music. This concert is an important step in this process. The Grove of the Four Gods, the single-act ballet the composer wrote in 1943, is one of Lajtha’s works which have been performed only once, if at all. In a joint production with the Szeged Contemporary Ballet, we can now discover the characteristically eclectic style of Lajtha’s music, which draws on the traditions of West and East alike, while retaining a richly French tone. The first part of the concert features one of the most popular concertos in music history, the work by Brahms premièred in 1879 by the violinist Joseph Joachim. The soloist will be Sergey Khachatryan, who was born in 1985 and finished in first or second place in a string of major international competitions between 2000 and 2005. His performances with partner orchestras including the New York, Cleveland and London Philharmonics have catapulted the young Armenian musician to become perhaps one of the most sought-after violinists in the world in just a few years.
