The Palace of Arts is contributing to the 2011 Liszt Year with a series, Liszt and the Piano, which presents right from the commencement of the season, programmes that explore interesting themes and relationships related to the composer. In this first concert, we hear a juxtaposition of works by Liszt and Chopin who is celebrating his two hundredth anniversary this year. The pianist is one of the most gifted pianists of the younger generation, Tamás Érdi. To this day, music historians have found... much to analyse in Liszt and Chopin: their relationship was not really a friendship – indeed it was much more complex. Liszt was of course present when Chopin, who had just fled Warsaw for Paris, gave his first ever concert at the Salle Pleyel in 1831, and shortly afterwards, both participated in a performance of the Hexameron variations on a march by Bellini, together with four other contemporary pianists. Chopin dedicated his studies op. 10 to Liszt but soon expressed strong reservations about his much more extrovert colleague. (Chopin’s death in 1849 meant he never encountered what we now regard as Liszt’s mature style.) Liszt dedicated many works and movements to Chopin, made his own arrangements and in 1878 published his edition of the Preludes. In 1852, he even wrote a book about Chopin although it seems his lover Caroline zu Sayn-Wittgenstein wrote much of it and its contents upset the Chopin family who claimed much had been invented. Despite this though, their artistic relationship is undeniable, something explored by Tamás Erdi with his recital. . Tickets: 1800, 3300, 4500 Ft
