Conductor: Zoltán Kocsis Featuring: Tamás Érdi – piano W. A. Mozart: The Marriage of Figaro – overture, K. 492 Piano Concerto in D minor, K. 466 Serenata notturna in D major, K. 239 Symphony in D major (“Haffner”), K. 385 For this charity concert, Zoltán Kocsis has assembled a programme of popular Mozart works. The overture for The Marriage of Figaro – which Mozart as usual only wrote after completing the opera – is not linked to the opera thematically but by mood, and it manages to e...voke the chaos and rapture of the “crazy day” depicted in the opera with tremendous élan. The Piano Concerto in D minor is one of the best known of all piano concertos. In Mozart’s oeuvre, the key of D minor is reserved for creating an austere and unique atmosphere with its dark colours. In all three movements of the concerto, demonic depths are revealed: the melodies are pointed and almost every motif carries the burden of fate. Before the end though, the colour lightens and the music turns to the major, and the work finishes cheerfully although perhaps with a hint of mockery in the way it bids farewell to the listener. The soloist will be Tamás Érdi who first recorded this work as an eighteen year old and has played it regularly ever since. The Serenata notturna was written for a divided instrumental ensemble and is characterised throughout by a playful and good natured humour. The Symphony in D major earned its nickname because Mozart composed it in 1782 to celebrate the appointment of the distinguished Salzburg gentleman, Sigmund Haffner, to the nobility.
