Formed in 1978 and based in San Francisco, it derives its name from the rooster that features in Geoffrey Chaucer’s 14th century Canterbury Tales. This bird sings with a clearer voice than an organ and it is more accurate than the tower clock. Because of their perfectly homogenous sonority, they are also called “an orchestra of voices”. Comprising of twelve members, their repertoire embraces everything from Gregorian through Renaissance to Gospel and contemporary music and jazz. And all the parts – including the sopranos – are sung by men. In their Budapest concert, they will sing emblematic polyphonic works from England, Italy and the Law Countries. We’ll also hear Gustav Mahler’s perhaps most beautiful Rückert Song, Four Small Prayers by 20th century French composer Francis Poulenc, a composer’s arrangement of a song by American Samuel Barber as well as several choral works by György Ligeti dating from the period before he emigrated from Hungary.
