Pianist and conductor: András Schiff Mendelssohn: Hebrides Overture, op. 26 Schumann: Introduction and Allegro Appassionato, op. 92 Mendelssohn: Piano Concerto in D minor, op. 40 Schumann: Symphony No. 2 in C major, op. 61 World famous globetrotter András Schiff visits his native Hungary every year as both conductor and pianist and with his carefully chosen programmes, enjoys illuminating musical relationships between different works and hitherto undiscovered beauties. This time, he has... programmed orchestral works by two figures of German Romanticism who were both frequently criticised for their symphonic work because it was felt to be too conservative in mood, and the orchestration insufficiently individual. András Schiff aims to prove the unfairness of these assertions by placing them in a new context. Felix Mendelssohn was just twenty one when he wrote his splendid depiction of nature, the Hebrides Overture. It has always held its place in the repertoire, but apart from the E minor Violin Concerto, Mendelssohn’s other concertos have been largely forgotten. We also rarely have a chance to hear Robert Schumann’s Introduction and Allegro Appassionato for piano and orchestra, This time András Schiff brings to Budapest an orchestra which achieved prominence through the work of two world famous conductors, Claudio Abbado and Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Formed in 1981 from fifty musicians drawn from fifteen countries, the Grammy Award winning Chamber Orchestra of Europe has won the recording of the year award of the British Gramophone magazine three times. Its account of Beethoven’s symphonies under Harnoncourt sold nearly a million copies. In the latest season, the musicians have worked with Péter Eötvös, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Maria Joao Pires and Emmanuel Krivine and in early 2007, toured with András Schiff with a programme of Bartók, Mozart and Beethoven in Salzburg, Zurich, Rome and Brussels.
