Conductor: János Kovács Featuring: Szabolcs Zempléni – horn Janáček: Sinfonietta Frigyes Hidas: Horn Concerto Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 in C minor, op. 67 (“Fate”) The Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra was founded by Ferenc Erkel in 1853 and for ninety years, was Hungary’s only professional orchestra and so naturally it was held as a model by all the subsequent ensembles. Over the years it has been conducted by composers and musicians such as Liszt, Brahms, Mahler, Mascagni, Prokofiev, Ra...vel, Richard Strauss, Stravinsky, Furtwängler and Klemperer. It was modelled on the Vienna Philharmonic and so works to this day as both opera and concert orchestra. Today’s programme unites conservative and progressive attitudes: Ludwig van Beethoven’s immortal and radical masterpiece is performed besides works from two different eras and cultural circles under principal guest conductor of the orchestra, János Kovács. The composition by Czech composer Leoš Janáček is now regarded as a work of genius and a 20th century classic; the Horn Concerto by Frigyes Hidas who died in 2007 is an accessible and witty work characteristic of the composer, who was especially adept at writing for brass instruments. This concerto also contains strings, celesta, harp and percussion in varying combinations, but is formally very classical in design. Completed in 1965, it was dedicated to the leading Hungarian horn player of its day Ferenc Tarjáni, one of whose most talented students, Szabolcs Zempléni will be tonight’s soloist. Born in 1981, he has been the principal horn of the Bamberg Symphonic Orchestra since 2005 and that same year, became the first Hungarian, and only the fifth horn player in history to win first prize at the ARD International Music Competition.
