Featuring: Dimitris Sgouros – piano Conductor: Iván Fischer R. Strauss: Der Rosenkavalier – first sequence of waltzes Liszt: Piano Concerto No. 2 in A major Stravinsky: Rite of Spring Liszt was preoccupied with the composition of his Piano Concerto in A major for a long time. He began writing it in 1839 when he was still primarily known as the world’s leading piano virtuoso. He finished it in 1861, by which time he had retired from performing and was devoting his time to composition.... Like his other large scale cyclical works, he bases it on a single theme and shows the many faces and characters of this same musical idea, that passes from profound reverie to military aggression. “Perhaps God has kept me alive just so I can hear Sgouros play. He is the best pianist I have ever known, myself included”, said Arthur Rubinstein just two months before his death. Dimitris Sgouros was born in Athens in 1969 and made his debut at the Carnegie Hall at the age of twelve, playing Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto with the Washington National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Rostropovich. Stravinsky originally wrote The Rite of Spring as a ballet. It was premiered in Paris in 1913 with Nijinsky’s choreography, conducted by Pierre Monteux, and resulted in one of the most famous scandals in music and theatre history. The work calls for one of the most immense orchestral apparatuses in music (twenty woodwind, eight horns, five trumpets etc.) and is divided into two sections: The Adoration of the Earth and The Sacrifice.
