Conductor: Zoltán Kocsis Featuring: Vadim Gluzman – violin Liszt–Kocsis: Ave Maria Liszt–Kocsis: Valse Oubliée No. 3 Liszt–Kocsis: Mazurka brillante Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto in D major, op. 35 R. Strauss: Aus Italien, op. 16 Zoltán Kocsis is a virtuoso pianist, conductor and music director of the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra but for many years, he has also been preoccupied with creating orchestral transcriptions of piano works by the great composers. Each arrangement in...volves far more than simple orchestration: he has to recreate the work in perfect harmony with the composer. We shall hear examples of three such works by Franz Liszt this evening. The soloist of the enduringly popular Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto will be Vadim Gluzman who was born in Ukraine in 1973 and has lived in Israel since 1990. He is one of the world’s premiere violinists and worked with all the greatest orchestras and conductors. He plays on a 1690 Stradivarius that once belonged to the great 19th century Hungarian virtuoso and teacher Leopold Auer loaned to him by the Stradivari Society of Chicago. “In Gluzman’s hands, this Stradivarius does not speak but it declares, sings, sighs and laughs”, wrote the Detroit Times. During the course of his long life Richard Strauss presided in a very important period of music history full of events: the transition from Romanticism to modern music. Symphonic poems (Don Juan, Till Eulenspiegel, Zarathustra) played a leading role in his output of which the very first – which makes it especially interesting for us today – is his very early Aus Italien (“From Italy”).
