Conductor: Tamás Gál Featuring: László Baranyay – piano Kodály: Dances of Galanta Kamilló Lendvay: Piano Concerto Bartók: The Miraculous Mandarin – ballet music (with projections) The Budapest Concert Orchestra MÁV began work in 1945 and until 1953, collaborated with the Hungarian State Opera House in the “Rolling Opera” project, bringing culture to distant areas of Hungary using the state rail network. Still supported by Hungarian Railways (MÁV) the orchestra has performed in many of t...he world’s leading concert halls, among them the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Stuttgart Liederhalle, the Vienna Musikvereinssaal and the Rome Accademia di Santa Cecilia; the orchestra has been a guest at festivals in Vienna, Assisi and Tours and performed to Pope John Paul II. It was also the only Hungarian ensemble to take part in the legendary “3 Tenor” concerts, with a performance in Tokyo under James Levine in 1999. This concert is a notable event because its artistic director, Tamás Gál, who has been with the orchestra since 1988, will be conducting his last concert in this capacity at the Palace of Arts. During his career he has demonstrated a commitment to new Hungarian works and an example of this is a piece by Kamilló Lendvay who is eighty years old in 2008. His Piano Concerto was written to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the founding of the Budapest Academy of Music and it features demanding, virtuosic piano playing alternating with lyrical sections. The soloist will be László Baranyay who also premiered the concerto. In the second half, we shall hear one of the great modern ballet scores by Béla Bartók which will be accompanied by an animated film by Géza M. Tóth who was nominated for an Oscar for his work on Maestro.
