Conductor: Jorge Mester Featuring: Kim Hye-Jin – piano Dohnányi: Symphonic Minutes, op. 36 Mozart: Piano Concerto in E flat major, K. 449 Stravinsky: Rite of Spring The Master Series by the Budapest Concert Orchestra MÁV has featured every year since the inception of the Palace of Arts and derives its title from the calibre of conductors and soloists who appear in it. The conductor opening the 2008 series is the distinguished Jorge Mester born in the Town of Mexico of Hungarian parentag...e, who now lives in the United States and since 1984 has been the music director of the Pasadena Symphony Orchestra. He is often described in the press as the champion of contemporary music: he has given world premieres of over seventy works, between 1967 and 1979 he also made seventy two world premiere recordings mainly of world famous composers, while music director of The Louisville Orchestra. He is also an active teacher and in the early eighties was a professor in the conducting faculty of the distinguished Julliard School of Music. His programme is ideal for showing his versatility as a conductor: Igor Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring was a scandal when first performed in 1913 and is one of the trickiest works in the entire symphonic repertoire to conduct. The soloist this evening is Korean piano artist Kim Hye-Jin, one of an ever growing number of top Korean instrumental artists.
