Featuring: Gary Hoffman – cello Conductor: Irwin Hoffman Piotr Tchaikovsky: Romeo and Juliet – Fantasy Overture Variations on a Rococo Theme Symphony No. 5 in E minor, op. 64 Last season, Hungarian audiences first met Irwin Hoffman when he conducted the Budapest Concert Orchestra MÁV. At that time, all we knew was that he led the Chicago Symphony Orchestra before Sir Georg Solti took over and that he remained a resident guest conductor during the Solti era. His Budapest concert allowed u...s to witness his artistry at close hand: Hoffman is an infinitely cultured and suggestive conductor who was warmly received by both the orchestra and audience and has been invited back again this year. The soloist in tonight’s programme, that brings together some of Tchaikovsky’s most popular works, will be the conductor’s son Gary Hoffman. He will perform Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations. In 1986, Gary Hoffman became the first American to win the Paris International Rostropovich Cello Competition. Since then, he has performed all over the world with a whole of famous orchestras and with conductors such as Herbert Blomstedt, Charles Dutoit, James Levine, Kent Nagano and Mstislav Rostropovich.
