Despite the scherzo in the title, Csemiczky's work is deadly serious: The piece contains elements of verbunkos with the wistful, nostalgic sound of the taragot, and the harmonies of Kodályi and Bartók. This contemporary work will be followed by an old classic: Kodály's iconic folk opera Háry János was premièred at the Budapest opera house in 1926. The idea to extract an orchestral suite from the work originated from Bartók's enthusiasm for musical theatre. Shostakovich himself described his Symp...hony No. 7 as follows: “The fourth movement... The triumph of light against darkness, of wisdom over madness, the victory of a higher form of humanism over the deathly reign of terror. Overall, I feel that the Seventh Symphony is an optimistic work. It is closer to the Fifth than the Sixth and is a continuation of the former's sentiments and mood.”
