We learn from his letters that Mahler was overcome by "heavenly delirium" when writing his Symphony No. 3 and that he knew in advance that "the gentlemen of the critical fraternity… will suffer attacks of dizziness…it is well known that I cannot do without trivialities, but this time all permissible bounds have been passed”. Mahler himself said the 100-minute philosophical opus was a "tough nut to crack", adding, "My calling it a symphony is really inaccurate, for it doesn’t keep to the traditio...nal form in any way." The stellar work received a standing ovation at its premiere in Amsterdam, where it was performed with a 230-strong female choir and a children's choir put through its paces by six teachers.
