Handel’s monumental oratorio The Messiah was premièred in Dublin in 1742. It remains one of the most popular works in all music. Despite its great reception, Handel continuously adjusted its orchestration and it did not attain its final form in his lifetime. Performances tended to follow the English tradition until the 1960: huge choruses and immense orchestras. This evening’s performers, who themselves have great experience performing large scale works, will attempt to approach the work accordi...ng to Handel’s original intentions: although they perform on modern instruments, the orchestra and choir will be relatively small and the entire work will be heard.
