The Boston Youth Symphony (BYS) is the premier symphony orchestra of the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras, an organisation which this year looks back on 54 years of music. The 100+ members orchestra traditionally performs the most demanding pieces in the concert repertoire. Under the gaze of its music director Federico Cortese, it regularly gives concerts in the leading concert halls of Massachusetts (including Boston Symphony Hall, Harvard University and New England Conservatory). Preparation...s for the new season begin in the preceding summer, when the members of the orchestra take part in an intensive two-week training camp. All the members of the orchestra also play in various chamber ensembles, where they perform works by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and others, thus practising techniques which they have less opportunity to master within a large symphony orchestra. The Boston Youth Symphony is the only youth ensemble of its kind in the United States which can boast its own opera series (with a repertoire of Mozart’s Così fan tutte, The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni, and Verdi’s Macbeth and Falstaff). Every other year, the ensemble embarks on a European tour, and has given concerts in Germany, the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom in recent years. Especially for the occasion of their début in Hungary, a 150-strong mixed choir under the name Chorus Hungaricus has been assembled from leading Hungarian choirs. The concert will be conducted by Federico Cortese, who worked as assistant conductor of the world-renowned Boston Symphony Orchestra under Seiji Ozawa in 1998-2002, before going on to conduct many of the world’s prominent orchestras (including the orchestras of Atlanta, Brooklyn, Dallas and Houston, the BBC Scottish Symphony, Sydney Symphony, Oslo Philharmonic and Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome).
