In the final performance of the “Vox Fortissima” series, we will hear the monumental Requiem by Hector Berlioz. It was commissioned by the French state to commemorate the victims of the July revolution of 1830 and the work was premièred in 1837. Berlioz’s intention was to write the greatest piece ever composed, and this led to the immense performing apparatus required, with a choir of at least 210 (80 sopranos and altos, 60 tenors and 70 basses), a huge orchestra (108 string players, 20 each of ...woodwind and brass, and 8 pairs of tympani) and four brass sections. There is though only one vocal soloist in the piece, a tenor who is heard in the Sanctus. This many musicians and the sound mass almost overpower the concert hall. Berlioz first demonstrated his astonishing power for moving the masses with his music and it was to remain a feature of his oeuvre. Eduard Hanslick, the famous 19th century music critic wrote about the work: “Berlioz reworks the ancient church text high handed and secular manner turning it into a fantastic drama”. Also the composer was aware of the importance of his creation. “If I had to burn all my works except for one, then the Requiem is the piece I would want to be spared”, he wrote in a letter. In this concert, it will receive a performance with a monumental performing apparatus – four choirs and two orchestras –, but this still falls well short of Berlioz’s original intentions.
