Before Christmas, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis will be heard in a performance by the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra with four Hungarian singer soloists. Although regarded as the twin of the Symphony No. 9 it is rarely heard. It is performed far less frequently than the Ninth, despite Beethoven regarding it as his greatest work. Although he originally intended it for liturgical use (or at least on one occasion) as he worked on it – and as it grew in concept – he ceased thinking in practi...cal terms although on a formal level, it does follow the traditions and rules of mass composition. The power of the work and its individuality breaks all boundaries of liturgical possibility. The Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra, in their role as Hungary’s goodwill ambassadors will be handing over the revenue generated by this concert to UNICEF.
