Two days after presenting his teacher, the unforgettable Alicia de Larrocha, with his new recording, Luis Fernando Pérez received the answer: “I’ve listened to it three times, I’m very happy.” At the same time, he has also incorporated the instructions of many other international greats of our times into his play. Dmitri Bashkirov taught him what would eventually become his ars poetica: you must reach for the heart of a work. Respect for the score and freedom of interpretation are what he sees a...s the secrets of the Russian school of which he too, through Bashkirov, is a student. The teachers he got to know at master classes look upon him as a colleague: he is a close friend of András Schiff, while his professor in Cologne, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, offered him a piece of good fatherly advice: Seek out your freedom! In addition to the above, he has learned the tricks of the trade from masters such as Beaux Arts Trio member Menahem Pressler, Bartók pupil György Sándor and Ferenc Rados. Pérez’s links to Hungary are further strengthened by his regular appearances as a guest at summer master classes, as well as his stint as assistant to Márta Gulyás at the Queen Sofía College of Music in Madrid. He has also performed in Budapest with the Bartók String Quartet, as well as touring with the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra, which is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its foundation this concert season. Born in 1977 in Madrid, Pérez is not a musician with everyday tastes, as he swears allegiance to the great pianists of the past. “I’m an admirer of the Hofmanns, Rosenthals and Friedmans,” he says. “Only the piano technique they represent interests me. Technology has largely murdered this magical art. The CD sterilizes, producing a cold sound. I’m fighting against this. I’m thinking of the giants of the golden age; I’m working to be worthy of them.”
