Three young performers converge here with the outstanding clarinettist and artistic director of the Győr Philharmonic to play Beethoven's unusual concerto for piano trio. István Várdai, the most talented Hungarian cellist of his generation, rose to great prominence in 2007 and 2008 when he came third in the International Tchaikovsky Competition and won the Geneva Music Competition (where he also collected three special prizes). Bálint Zsoldos is also a regular performer on the domestic and inter...na-tional concert circuit and has played at the Salzburg Festival, the Santander Summer Festival and the Budapest Spring Festival. The Triple Concerto will be preluded by a piece by Sándor Szokolay, who celebrates his 80th birthday in March. The composition was commissioned by the city of Sopron to commemorate the 20th anniver-sary of the pan-European picnic. It will be performed with a Beethoven-scale orchestra expanded to include a tuba and tubular bells. After the interval, the Győr Philharmonic will perform Alexander Borodin's Symphony No. 3 in B minor. Composed in 1876, it is one of the key works from this member of The Five, the influential collec-tive of Russian composers. Presented by the Győr Philharmonic Orchestra and the Palace of Arts
