This year two hundred years ago, one of the greatest figures of Viennese classicism, and indeed of all music, passed away. His name was Franz Joseph Haydn. He spent much of his life in the service of Count Nicholas Esterházy at the Esterhazy family’s summer and winter residences in Kismarton (now Eisenstadt in Austria) and Fertőd. In 1987, Ádám Fischer founded the Austro-Hungarian Haydn Philharmonic to perform the works by this towering genius of his age. The project carried the additional objec...tive of bringing together the finest musicians of Austria and Hungary to perform works where they were originally written and employing the apparatus that Haydn had in mind. Over a fifteen-year spell, the ensemble recorded all of Haydn’s symphonies and remains the resident orchestra of the annual International Haydn Festival held in Eisenstadt. Besides the whole diversity of Haydn’s music, the Austro-Hungarian Haydn Philharmonic also retains in its repertoire some of the music of Mozart and Beethoven. The ensemble is a regular guest of leading festivals, including the BBC Proms concerts, the New York Mostly Mozart series, the Salzburg Mozart Week, the Schwarzenberg Schubertiade and the Budapest Spring Festival. Their leading conductor is Ádám Fischer who has taken a growing role in Hungary’s music life. As general music director of the Hungarian State Opera House, he is also the artistic director of the increasingly respected “Wagner in Budapest” Opera Festival at the Palace of Arts, as well as conductor, and he also now conducts the traditional New Year’s concerts at the Palace.
