Anne-Sophie Mutter is among the world’s most-recorded soloists. In 2011, she celebrated the 35th anniversary of her first public concert, since when she has registered more than 50 albums under her own name. The first of these – with the Berlin Philharmonic under Herbert von Karajan in 1978 – contained the same two Mozart concertos to be heard at this concert. This world-renowned, multiple Grammy Award-winning artist has also been a prominent performer of contemporary music for the past 20 or 30... years, and has had pieces composed for her by several notable composers, among them Dutilleux, Gubaidulina, Penderecki, Lutosławski and Rihm. Four new works have been included on her new recording, issued for the 35th anniversary, including a violin concerto entitled Lichtes Spiel – Ein Sommerstück (Light Game – a Summer Piece) by Wolfgang Rihm, the most important German composer of our day. The work was also inspired by Mutter and performed by the violinist at its première with the New York Philharmonic in 2010. At Mutter’s request, the work was written for a Mozart orchestra with the express aim of having it performed alongside works by Mozart. The career of conductor Michael Francis, who held the baton at the world première, began in 2006 when he stepped up to the podium from his position as a double bass player in the London Symphony Orchestra to take a rehearsal of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 4. The young conductor has since directed numerous world-famous orchestras, while stepping in to save productions in fairytale style on several occasions. For this concert, he will accompany one of the world’s most popular violinists at the head of the Kammerorchester Wien-Berlin, an outstanding orchestra comprising members of the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonics.
